I am sitting in front of my computer thinking about what advice I would give my 20 year old self and my first gut response to this question is “Absolutely nothing!”
Why nothing? Well, I wouldn’t want to risk changing anything. I love my life right now and every decision I’ve made up to now has positioned me to be where I am today.
Assuming the advice I give will only result in improving what I have today, then my number one piece of advice would be to be more patient and attentive. I spent a lot of time with my kids but I feel like I should have been more patient and attentive. Same with my wife, friends, co-workers and customers. Being more patient and attentive means living in the moment. If you are at work, work all the time you are working. Dive into what you are doing, do your absolute best and learn from others. When you are with your kids, give them your full attention and really investigate their thoughts and feelings in the moment.
Be in the moment. That is the advice I would give my 20 year old self and that is the advice I am giving myself today. When on a video call or just sitting and chatting with family and friends, dive into the conversation, actively listen and listen for understanding, don’t just listen to respond.
So, 20 year old Ricky, if you are listening out there……BE IN THE MOMENT!
