Early on in my sales career a coworker asked if I would go to a Peak Performers seminar with him. He had a free ticket and I said “Why not”. The peak performers seminar was a lineup of motivational speakers every other month that presented on various topics mostly around sales and self improvement. The first seminar I attended was Brian Tracy and his speech centered around one topic, eating the frog. The frog represents the thing you are avoiding to take action on in the moment. The subject of procrastination. If you needed to eat a frog today, would you rather wait until the end of the day and have the thought of needing to eat a frog hang out in your daily thoughts or would you rather eat the frog first thing in the morning and not have to worry or think about that frog the rest of the day. Of Corse you would eat the frog first thing so why not tackle that uncomfortable conversation or task as your first thing. The speech and messaging from Brian Tracy triggered something in me that said, “wow, can I improve my life in one simple action?” So I gave it a try and my life got better. When the next seminar came around I signed up for a whole year of seminars and continued to do so until the seminars stopped 4 years later. After the seminars stopped I began reading at least 6 books a year that would help drive me to be a little better and that is the personal expectation I have for myself. I am not trying to be better than anyone else or measuring myself against anyone else, I am just trying to be better than I was yesterday.
